What is the difference between Sheriff's Deputies, City Police and the
CHP?
- Sheriff Deputies are the primary officials who handle all criminal and civil
matters within the unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz County.
- The city Police are the primary officials who handle all criminal and traffic
matters within the city limit boundaries of their respective cities.
- The CHP are the primary officials who handle all traffic matters on the roadways
in the unincorporated areas of the county.
If I need help, who do I call?
- If you live within a city's jurisdiction, call that police department. If you
live outside the city limits of any city, call the Sheriff's Office. If you live outside the city limits of any
city and have a traffic problem, call the CHP.
A Deputy came to my house. What number do I call if I have more questions?
- For non-emergency direct assistance (24hrs-a-day, 7-days a week) call 471-1121.
- To leave a message for a specific deputy(Mon.-Fri. 8-5), call 454-2440.
How do I get a copy of my report?
- Call the Sheriff's Office Records Division at 454-2242.
How do I find out what is going on with my case?
- You can speak to the Deputy who took the original report. If the case was referred
to the Investigation Bureau for follow up, call and ask to speak to the Detective assigned to case at 454-2311.
How do I find out if someone is in jail?
- Call the Santa Cruz County Jail at
454-2420.
How do I drop charges against someone?
- Call the District Attorney's Office and ask to speak to the Assistant District
Attorney assigned to your case 454-2400.
How do I stop someone from bothering/harassing
me?
A Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) is designed to help in these types of situations. Contact the County Clerk's
Office at:

Do I need a Sheriff's report to get a TRO?

paper?

What can I do about abandoned vehicles in my neighborhood?
- The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office
Abandoned Vehicle Program receives complaints about abandoned
vehicles or vehicles left parked on streets for more than 72
hours. To notify
the Sheriff’s Office of an abandoned vehicle call (831)
454-3139. All
complaints are confidential.
What can I do about my neighbor's barking dog?
- Contact the Santa Cruz County
Animal Services Authority at 454-7303.
What are the rules/laws pertaining to loud and abusive noise?
- The County Code prohibits "offensive noise" between the hours of 10:00
P.M. and 8:00 A.M. within 100 feet of any building or place regularly used for sleeping. "Offensive noise"
is generally: loud, boisterous irritating, penetrating, unusual, etc. that is likely to disturb people with ordinary
sensitivities. The State Penal Code prohibits anyone from maliciously and willfully disturbing another person
with loud and unreasonable noise. Remember that not all loud noise is illegal. Farming operations, ongoing construction,
etc. can be perfectly legal endeavours. If you have any questions, call 471-1121 and ask to speak to a deputy.
How do I find out my rights as a landlord or tenant?
- Landlord-tenant information is available to all people at the Santa Cruz Law

If I am behind on my rent, can my landlord
change the locks or lock me out?
- No. However, landlords can proceed with a court action for unlawful detainer
that if sustained, will return the property to them.
Can a landlord seize a tenant's possessions in payment for past due rent?
- No. However, a landlord can obtain a court ordered judgement to recover past
due monies owed them.
Can a landlord enter a tenant's rental property without permission from
the tenant?
- Generally no. The landlord can make entry to resolve an emergency situation
such as a fire, leaking plumbing, etc. The landlord can also make periodic and reasonable inspections of the property
with 24-hour notice to the tenant.
