"Our mission is to be united with local communities to make Santa Cruz County a place where all people can live safely and without fear."

Sheriff's Office Mission Statement

Operations Bureau

The Sheriff's Office is composed of three Bureaus:  the Operations Bureau, the Detention Bureau and the Administration Bureau. The Operations Bureau provides the services to the unincorporated area of Santa Cruz County that citizens are most familiar with:  patrol and investigation.  These services are provided by two divisions, the Patrol Division and the Investigation Division.

PATROL DIVISION
The Patrol Division provides a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour-a-day, first responder 9-1-1 service.  These deputies drive the distinctive green and white Sheriff's Office patrol cars that can be seen around the county at any time of day or night.  To accomplish this around-the-clock-mission, the Patrol Division is divided into two teams: the A-Team is on duty from Wednesday through Saturday, and the B-Team works from Sunday through Wednesday.  Both patrol teams are further divided into four shifts to cover the twenty-four-hour day as follows:

1st Watch 6:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
2nd Watch 2:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.
3rd Watch 5:00 p.m. - 3:00 a.m.
4th Watch 9:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.

This four-shift rotation allows for overlapping coverage during those hours when calls for service are the most demanding, primarily from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.  A Sheriff's Sergeant is assigned to each shift.  The Sergeant directs the activities of the shift and coordinates enforcement assignments in response to calls for service.

Our county has changed through the years as it has grown.    In order to meet the corresponding changing and growing law enforcement needs of the community, the Sheriff's Office has created teams of responders who are specially trained to meet specific needs and to safely handle unique calls for service.  These teams are composed of Sheriff's Deputies and, in some cases, include civilian community members.  Please take a moment and introduce yourself to the Sheriff's Office special teams:
