Sheriff's South
County
Service Center
CURRENT PROJECTS
SAL (Sheriff's Activities League) Program
This program is a huge undertaking
for the Sheriff's Office and provides athletic programs for youth throughout the county.
SAL Mission Statement
The primary mission of the SAL program is
to promote a constructive relationship between law enforcement agencies, young
people, and citizens of the community, and to develop young people into
responsible and mature citizens. SAL programs are designed to develop
activities which act as deterrents to delinquent behavior among young people,
and keep them occupied with constructive, organized activity. To achieve these
objectives, SAL will initiate and sponsor amateur athletic and non-athletic
programs to offer opportunities to young people for constructive and satisfying
use of leisure time and provide an opportunity for young people and law
enforcement personnel to develop a mutually satisfying non-adversarial
relationship.
The SAL Vision
SAL was crated to provide an alternative for
young people to gangs, Graffiti, involvement in other illegal activities, and
idle time. SAL assists in building self-esteem, pride, and the ethic of
teamwork. SAL places emphasis on scholastic achievements as well as the basics
of sport and success. SAL was designed to provide law enforcement with a means
to mentor young people in the communities they serve.

Mesa Village
The Mesa Village Project continues to be the most time consuming of all South Sector's activities. Community meetings
have been held following the original survey and steps are being made to address Mesa Village Park, Speeding, Street
Lights, Cross Walks, Garbage Pick Up Days, and Gang Activity. The
new service center in the park should be open for business very
soon, allowing Mesa residents immediate and direct access to law
enforcement.
National Night Out
The Mesa Village Park Night Out was a huge success. Approximately 200 residents, law enforcement members, and county
representatives including Supervisor Tony Campos, and Watsonville Police Chief Terry Medina
met in the park in conjunction with National Night Out to show their initial efforts to "Take Back the Park."
VOLUNTEERS
Sgt. Morales is working on expanding the existing volunteer program at the
South County Center and is seeking
volunteers. Volunteers currently answer phones, greet the public, provide information on Sheriff's Office services,
take minor crime reports, assist in community events, meetings, and conduct various other duties. Future plans
for volunteers at the South County center include vehicle abatement, vacation watch, agriculture watch, and citizen
patrol.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a volunteer at the
South County Service Center, contact Sgt. Roy Morales at 763-4420. We are especially encouraging
those with bilingual abilities to apply.
