Domestic Violence Unit
Domestic Violence:
It is a crime for anyone to hit or hurt you. Domestic
violence can occur between people of any sexual orientation who are married, separated, dating, have
dated, are living together, have lived together or have children together.
The Domestic Violence Unit:
The Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office Domestic Violence Unit is a part of the Investigation Division of the Santa Cruz
Sheriff's Office Operations Bureau. The unit is responsible for, among other things, follow-up investigations of
cases involving domestic violence and other related crimes and incidents.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office generates almost 1,000 domestic violence related cases per year that originate
in the unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz County. Not all of these
cases involve acts of violence. Some include
non-violent incidents (domestic disturbances) that may lead to further violence, restraining order violations,
stalking, threats, and other related cases. Almost half of the
total number of domestic violence related cases
involve a suspect being arrested and taken to jail.
The responsibility of the Domestic Violence Unit, among other things, is to review each and every one of these cases
and to determine whether follow up is required for a case to successfully traverse the legal system.
Of these approximately
1,000 cases, about 25 percent require further investigation for successful prosecution.
