Deputy Sheriff Job Description

Deputy sheriffs are uniformed sworn employees who enforce the law in the unincorporated areas of the county. Deputies must have an active interest in working with people and be able to be fair with all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious belief, political affiliation, or economic level. Patrol deputies work 4 day/10-hour shift workweeks.

Deputies perform a variety of duties:

  • Respond to emergency calls for assistance
  • Investigate complaints
  • Investigate suspicious behavior
  • Arrest persons suspected of committing crime
  • Provide assistance in resolving problems
  • Patrol urban, suburban, and rural areas

Deputies provide services from several locations throughout the county:

  • County Government Center, Santa Cruz
  • San Lorenzo Valley Service Center, Felton
  • Live Oak Service Center, Santa Cruz
  • Aptos Service Center, Aptos
  • Freedom Service Center, Watsonville
  • Cabrillo College, Aptos
