Correctional Officer Job Description Correctional officer are uniformed non-sworn employees who maintain order and prevent escape from the county jail system. Correctional officers have daily personal contact with inmates. Correctional officers must be able to be fair and impartial when dealing with inmates and yet avoid arousing antagonism. Correctional officers work 12-hour shifts, with alternating four and three day workweeks. Correctional officers perform a variety of duties: Booking staff processes new intakes, court remands, and inmate releases from custody. Housing staff conducts inmate counts, safety inspections, assist court security deputies to prepare inmates for transport, supervise inmate feeding, and assist civilian staff with daily duties. Control staff monitors all activity within the facility and controls access to the facility. The Sheriff's Office operates four custody facilities:
