On Tuesday April 8, 2008 the Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff’s Association and Correctional Officers Association will be hosting a ‘Tip a Cop’ benefiting Special Olympics at Chili’s Grill and Bar in Capitola from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The public is invited.  Uniformed officers will be serving diners.  If patrons like the service their tax deductible tip will directly support Special Olympics, an organization that provides local persons with developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate and enjoy sports activities in a safe environment.  Special Olympics rely upon law enforcement nationwide for their generous support in order to provide these opportunities for the developmentally disabled.  Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office has offered support since 1988 and is a proud sponsor of Special Olympics.  Law Enforcement joins the athletes in their commitment to the Special Olympics oath, “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Special Olympics provide local athletes the opportunity to participate year round in sports that include swimming, track and field, baseball, soccer, bowling, and basketball.  On June 2, 2008 local law enforcement will be participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run that carries the “Flame of Hope” across Santa Cruz County.  The effort is part of the statewide torch run that leads up to the Summer Games June 6-8, 2008 hosted on University of California at Berkeley.  Persons wishing to make a donation or pledge may contact Sgt. Fred Plageman at shfmedia@co.santa-cruz.ca.us or (831) 454-2288.

Please join us at Chili’s Restaurant for a fun evening and to support Special Olympics.  Further information about Special Olympics can be found on the website www.sonc.org or by contacting Andrea Schofield, Development Director at andreas@sonc.org or (408) 392-0170.
