Type of Incident:  Promotion to Sheriff’s Sergeant

 

Description of Incident:  On Thursday 02/21/2008 at approximately 1 PM Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner Steve Robbins conducted an official ceremony to present Deputy Michael MacDonald with a new badge, promoting MacDonald to sergeant.  The ceremony was conducted in the Patrol Roll Call Room at the Sheriff’s Office.  Bureau Chief Deputies, Sheriff’s supervisors, peers, colleagues and members of MacDonald’s family were present during the ceremony.  After Sheriff Robbins officially swore in Sgt. MacDonald, MacDonald’s wife Marissa MacDonald pinned the sergeant’s badge on MacDonald.  The Macdonald’s reside in Felton.

 

Sgt. MacDonald stressed the importance of having the support of his family and being a longtime resident of the county as assisting him in attaining his new promotion.  He promised to maintain the highest level of ethics, personal service and commitment to the community that he serves.  These were all points that were stressed by Sheriff Robbins as a necessary ingredient for becoming a leader at the Sheriff’s Office and within the community.

 

Sgt. MacDonald attended Chico State University where he majored in Political Science.  After graduating from the P.O.S.T. Basic Police Academy at Butte College in 1996 he was hired by the Sheriff’s Office August 25, 1997.  He has served as a patrol deputy, court security officer, field training officer and detective in the investigation division where he has had a pivotal role in the investigation of the most serious crimes.  Sgt. Macdonald will pursue his new assignment while assigned as the B-Team Patrol dayshift watch commander in the Operations Bureau.  The promotion served to backfill a vacancy created by the newly opened County Courthouse in Watsonville.
