Deputy Larry Griffin
Deputy Larry Griffin was awarded the Bronze Medal for his
quick thinking and
efficient response to an armed robbery that took place on December 1,
2004,
at a Wells
Fargo Bank in Aptos. Deputy Griffin's actions were key components
to the ultimate success of the case.
Deputy Griffin, who was on duty and assigned to Cabrillo
College, monitored only
a part of the original dispatch call. Deputy Griffin spotted the suspect vehicle traveling
northbound and began following the car which contained
three suspects. Deputy Griffin
broadcast the license plate number and NetCom confirmed the
vehicle to be stolen.
Deputy Griffin activated his overhead lights and
the suspects stopped their vehicle.
Deputy Griffin obtained additional information about the original dispatch call
and
determined it was safer to keep the suspects waiting while additional law enforcement
personnel responded. The suspects entertained the possibility of a gun battle with
Deputy Griffin,
but decided to flee instead. Deputy Griffin had provided enough vital
information so other responding personnel could establish a perimeter and conduct a
ground search. This
ultimately ended in the capture of all the suspects, seizure of the
assault weapons, and recovery of the stolen money.
