ABANDONED VEHICLE PROGRAM

The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office administers the state-funded vehicle abatement program and assigns Community Service Officers to the task of vehicle abatement.  Officers check for violations, notice and remove or abate improperly parked, abandoned, wrecked, dismantled and inoperative cars, trucks, RVs and trailers.

The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office Abandoned Vehicle Program receives complaints about abandoned vehicles or vehicles left parked on streets for more than 72 hours.    To notify the Sheriff’s Office of an abandoned vehicle call (831) 454-3139.  All complaints are confidential.  Be prepared to leave the following information after the recorded message, as available:

ü      Location of the vehicle.

ü      Color of the vehicle.

ü      Make and model of the vehicle.

ü      License plate number.

Or print out form, complete, and fax to (831) 465-1959 or mail to:

A reported abandoned vehicle will be verified and the tires will be chalked.  After the required 72-hour waiting period has passed, and if the vehicle has not been sufficiently moved, the officer shall issue a ten-day notice of intention to abate and remove the vehicle.  (There are certain vehicle code provisions that allow the Sheriff’s Office to remove vehicles immediately which are obviously inoperable.)
